Bluegrass Heritage Museum 2nd Thursday Program
A "Thrifty and Respectable" Folk: Colorful Likenesses of Early Clark County
by Sally Gant and Harry Enoch and a display of painting from Mack Cox's collection - The noted historian Sally Gant is the retired Emeritus Director of Education at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she continues as a member of the interpretive and research staff. Her current area of research is the “Bluegrass-Guilford Limner,” an itinerant folk portrait artist who worked in Kentucky, North and South Carolina between 1820-1833. The paintings have been featured on the Antiques Roadshow and sold at Sotheby’s auction house. The earliest works were in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. She will speak on the portraits painted by this unnamed artist in Clark County, Kentucky, where he visited homes and painted subjects in the Lower Howard’s Creek neighborhood.
Harry Enoch is a retired biochemist who has been researching and writing about local history since 1997.
Also featured at the program will be Mack Cox’s collection of original portraits by the Bluegrass-Guilford Limner, including three portraits made in the Bush Settlement in Clark County.
